Atypical depression…

Posted by cjrambling on May 20, 2009

I had always thought of depression as a can’t get out of bed, suicidal, crying all the time kind of thing, however, I’ve been doing a lot of research online lately to figure out what the heck is wrong with me and I’m thinking it might actually be a form of depression known as “atypical depression.” Don’t let the name fool you though, its a very common form of depression. Some characteristics are that it is fairly long term (we’re talking years here), it’s a “milder” form of depression, you can still feel “upbeat” or happy in response to positive things, weight gain, and excessive sleeping or sleepiness.

Anyway, it’s not like I’ve gone to a doctor or anything so I could be way off base, but it was interesting to discover that this particular form of depression goes largely undiagnosed because it kinda sneaks up on people and they think it’s just a normal part of their personality. I guess I just always figured since I wasn’t going on crying jags all the time it couldn’t be depression, but apparently I was wrong….
